Selecting a Web Hosting Operating System

While looking for a web hosting provider then one of the first things that you often have to consider is what operating system the server will run on. Different web hosting providers use different operating systems to host the websites. This is a main criterion that you must check out for before selecting a web hosting service provider.

*Linux - Linux is one of the most widely used operating systems on the Web. It is also widely preferred by the web hosting service providers. This is mostly because it is so cheap to install and get up and running.

*Macintosh - Macintosh web hosting servers are very uncommon. In fact, if you want to host your site on a Macintosh server then you will probably have to look into web hosting your site yourself.

*Unix - Unix is very much alike Linux but still is not as common on web hosting services. This is so beacuse it is more expensive and the hardware is also more specific.

*Windows - Windows is another very common operating system used for Web hosting services, mainly because it has a lot of support.

This is a good knowledge of web hosting operating system was selected as the best in my point of view, Linux is one of the most common operating systems used on the web. It is also very popular among web hosting providers. This is mainly because it is so cheap to install and setup and activation. Unix is very similar to Linux, but not as a general web hosting.

If you plan to use Active Server Pages or .ASP or if you need to have a dynamically database driven website, Windows is superior in this regard. In fact, Unix servers do not support .ASP, which makes your choice clear if you plan to use this popular scripting language on your site.

Windows platform will obviously be the best choice for you because Unix does not support Windows development programs and if this is the development language of your choice, you would be best served by a Windows based server..i got my hosting service from Tucktail and i got windows hosting service..

One of the differentiating factors between web hosting packages is the operating system. Just like your desktop computer (probably running Microsoft Windows or an Apple Mac OS), web servers run an operating system. It's the software that makes the computer go. There are two major types of OS in the web hosting world – Windows and UNIX. The major variant of UNIX is called Linux.

For basic web sites it doesn't really matter whether you choose Linux or Windows hosting. Your pages will work just the same whichever you choose. But for more advanced users it pays to make the right choice.

Which OS to choose comes down to what you want to do with your web site. For example if you want to install certain apps such as WordPress (see below) then you need to know which OS the app runs best on. Here are some examples:

Apps that run better on Linux:

WordPress blogging system

Magento shopping cart

Joomla website building software

Apps that run better on Windows:

Umbraco website building software

nopCommerce shopping cart

BlogEngine net blogging system

But – almost all the Linux apps can also run on Windows!
