What is the difference between burstable and dedicated bandwidth that hosting providers offer?

Kailash

Burstable RAM means, you can use additional RAM if server resources are available. Dedicated means, it is fixed allocated RAM and you can use all allocated RAM.

For example, if you 1 GB RAM server with 1 GB Burst RAM, you can use up to 2 GB RAM Maximum if additional 1 GB Burst RAM is available for your server.

The customer then sets a burstable bandwidth plan that uses an open network port to deliver additional bandwidth on demand. When network traffic hits the limits of the dedicated bandwidth plan, the burstable bandwidth (sometimes called a fractional commit) provides additional capacity to handle the high data volume
Dedicated bandwidth is bandwidth that's reserved solely for the use of one subscriber, usually a business. ... Unlike broadband connections, there's no drop in data throughput at peak times. Dedicated bandwidth is usually symmetrical. This means that the connection can send and receive data at the same high speed.

Hosting providers offer two types of bandwidth: burstable and dedicated.

Burstable bandwidth:
It is the amount of data that can be transferred in a short time, usually measured in seconds. This type of bandwidth is typically used for short-term activities, such as downloading a large file or streaming video.

Dedicated bandwidth:
Dedicated bandwidth can transfer the amount of data over a more extended time, usually measured in minutes. This bandwidth is typically used for long-term activities, such as hosting a website or an email server.
