What is Google PageRank?

Google PageRank evaluates and scores your page's external and internal links, and is one of Google's oldest and well-known ranking algorithms. The PageRank algorithm is a link analysis program that evaluates the links on (and backlinks to) a page as a part of Google's search ranking factors. The goal of PageRank's evaluations is to push not only the most relevant but the most authoritative pages on a given subject to the top of the search engine results pages (SERPs). PageRank is not the same as your SERP rank; rather the PageRank algorithm influences your SERP position via ranking factors.

Google PageRank, named after Google co-founder Larry Page, is an algorithm used by Google to measure the importance or authority of web pages. It was a key component of Google's early search engine ranking system. Although PageRank is no longer the sole factor in determining search rankings, it still plays a role in Google's ranking algorithm along with many other factors.

The PageRank algorithm works on the principle that a web page's importance is influenced by the number and quality of links it receives from other web pages. The more inbound links a page has from highly ranked pages, the higher its PageRank will be. Each link is considered a vote of confidence or endorsement for that page's content.

PageRank values are represented by a numerical score ranging from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest rank. The PageRank score is logarithmic, meaning that it becomes progressively harder to achieve higher scores as the scale increases.

It's important to note that PageRank is calculated on a per-page basis, not for the entire website. Each page in a website can have a different PageRank based on its own set of inbound links.

While PageRank was a significant factor in Google's early ranking algorithm, the ranking algorithm has evolved over time to incorporate a multitude of factors, such as relevance, user signals, website quality, and more. These additional factors contribute to determining a web page's position in search results.

Google no longer publicly displays the PageRank score for individual web pages, and it is not as prominent a factor in search rankings as it once was. However, the concept of evaluating the importance and authority of web pages through link analysis remains an important aspect of Google's ranking algorithm.
